CHAPTER 16

âI was happy to see you on the schedule,â my therapist said, inviting me into her bright office, which was lined with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a grove of gnarled live oak trees whose winding branches created interesting shapes in and amongst the leaves.
She was set up in the same complex in Austin as Hikaruâs trauma therapist, so Iâd offered to drive him to his appointment today. âMy grandson goes to therapy in the building across the way. Figured Iâd take advantage.â
âIâm glad you did. Youâre looking good. How are you feeling?â she asked, sitting at her desk as I took the small sofa across from her.
âIâm not sure.â
That was a lie. It had been less than two weeks since I ended things with Major, and I felt like horse shit.
Her brows raised as she reached for her iPad and stylus to take notes. âNot sure in what way?â
âYou remember that my husband was a teacher, right?â
âYes.â
âAnd how his class sort of became a safe space for the queer kids at the school?â
âYes. It was a lovely thing he did for them.â
I hesitated, not sure how much I wanted to get into this.
She looked up from the tablet. âRen? Is there a reason why you brought that up?â
âFor the past couple of monthsâuntil recentlyâIâd been sleeping with one of his former students,â I said, deciding to be direct. Fuck it, I was paying her, right?
âSo, former student as in someone whoâs college aged?â
I shook my head. âHeâs in his early thirties now.â
âI see. Was he one of those⦠What did your husband call them?â
âLost Boys.â
âThatâs it. The Lost Boys,â she murmured as she scribbled a note on the screen.
A small grin tilted my lips. Robert would have loved the combination of psychology and technology. Then I remembered that he was the reason I was here, and the smile fled as quickly as it had arrived.
Focus, Ren.
âI think the last time I came in for a session, Beckett was about to open up the new Meeting House in Seguin on property that Robert had left to him.â
âYes, thatâs right. How was that?â
âIt sucked, mostly,â I said.
âDid things not go as planned?â
I shook my head. âThe celebration went off without a hitch. I just felt like I had to hide how sad I was.â
âSurely your friends and family would expect you to be at least a little sad. Especially given your husbandâs ties to the land and the cause.â
âI know. But everyone else was so happy. They were emotional, they remembered Robert in some very lovely ways, but I felt so out of place. They all found joy in remembering my husband, and I was left sobbing in the car.â
âIâm so sorry to hear that,â she said, creasing her eyebrows in thought. âWhat happened after that?â
âExcellent question,â I said. âI was approached by one of his former students, Major. His business is on an adjacent tract of landâheâd purchased the property to help Beckett fund the Meeting Houseâand his grand opening was the same day.
